September is when the comarca changes hands. The peaches at Mas Riera finished on 22 August; the figs start next week and run until the first cold night, which usually falls in the middle of October. Can Torrent in Llinars still has tomatoes, but the good boxes go before ten on a Saturday, so go early or ring the day before and ask them to keep one.

Eggs are the easy buy. Can Rovira in Cardedeu sells on Tuesday and Saturday mornings from the yard, 9 km from Granollers on the road to Cànoves. The sign is wrong; the farm is the second gate. Ask for Pere.

Bread only on Fridays at the mill in Sant Celoni, and only until it runs out, which is early. Flour all week. From Granollers it is 24 km and the last stretch is single track, so leave the trailer at home.

Honey: the hives above Cànoves come down in September and the jars appear from the second week. Last year they were gone by Christmas.

We have not been back to Formatges Puigsec since June last year. The line stays in the list with the old date on it, and says so, until one of us drives up the Montseny again.

Cardedeu for the eggs and Llinars for the tomatoes fit in one morning, and you are home for lunch. The mill at Sant Celoni is a different trip.

7 Questions Asked at the gate

Questions we get asked at the gate.

Do producers pay to be listed?
No, and they can’t. Readers pay 24 € a year for a comarca, less than one trip to a farm with nothing to sell. That is what keeps the honey from Portugal off the list.
What do I get without paying?
The articles, and three entries in each comarca. The rest of the lines need a comarca or a region.
Why comarcas and not a circle around me?
A comarca has a market, a road and a season. A circle around your phone has none. Nine kilometres over the Montseny is a different morning from nine along the C-251.
What happens when an entry gets old?
At twelve months the line says so, in the list, in the same place. We take it out when the producer stops selling to the public, and we say why on the comarca page.
Can I order through the site?
No. You get the name, the road, the days, the season and a phone number. The buying happens at the gate.
I know a producer who isn’t in the list.
Send them in with the form at the bottom of the comarca page. One of us goes, buys something, and if they sell to the public the line goes up with that day’s date.
When does it open, and which comarca is next?
Vallès Oriental first, then Osona. After that, the comarca we have driven, not the one with the most producers on paper.
